Here are several misconceptions about food. The truth about these misconceptions can lead to a healthier life.

Myth: Eggs are bad for the heart.

Eggs contain 211mg of cholesterol per large egg. The cholesterol a human eats reduces the cholesterol the body makes. Saturated and trans fats have a bigger impact on raising cholesterol. A healthy person can eat one egg a day because it has only two grams of saturated fat and no trans fat without being bad for the heart.

Myth: High fructose sugar is not as healthy as table sugar.

High fructose corn syrup is no worse than sucrose or table sugar. It has the same effect on insulin, glucose and triglycerides as sucrose or table sugar. Reducing the amount of sugars is more important to health.

Myth: Eating raw foods aids in digestion.

Eating raw foods does not enhance digestion. The enzymes in plants are not essential to human consumption. The body produces enough enzymes itself.

Myth: Beans must be eaten with rice to receive the protein benefit.

It is not necessary to eat beans with rice to obtain the protein from the beans. Proteins are made of 20 combinations of amino acids of which 11 are manufactured by the body. The balance comes from food. The rice and beans can be consumed at different times to achieve the protein benefit.

Myth: Microwaving food destroys the food's nutrients.

The time and temperature food is cooked not microwaved affects the loss of nutrients. The longer and hotter food is cooked, the better chance water sensitive nutrients like vitamin C and thiamine will be lost.

Myth: The radiation from microwaving food adds dangerous compounds to the food.

Microwaves used for cooking are much weaker than X-rays and gamma rays and cause no health threat. There is a concern that microwaving food in some plastic containers can leach some compounds from the plastic.
